Welcome to the age of the mind where capital, assets, large scale industrial machines are no longer the primary factors of production. The prime factor of production is now the human mind. It’s a new world, where the mind matters and superior minds rule.
As sociologist Manuel Castells says, “For the first time in history, the human mind is a direct productive force … Computers, communication systems, and genetic decoding and programming are all amplifiers and extensions of the human mind.”
My fascination with the power and potential of the human mind has made neuroscience such a fascination for me. Even neuroscience has barely scratched the surface of the possibilities and intricacies of the human mind.
What role then does the human mind play in the achievement of mastery and success?
I’ll begin with Steven Covey’s principle of two creations – Everything is created twice. First WITHIN and then WITHOUT. It means everything starts with the power of thought. Good or evil, Mediocre or excellent, quality or shoddy. Yes! They are all creations of the mind.
Thoughts are things!
Your dream life, except it is nurtured sufficiently in the mind will not produce its equivalent reality. A man is what his thoughts make of him. “Be careful how how you think, your life is shaped by your thoughts”says Solomon in the book of Proverbs. Invest more effort in the transformation of your mind than you do in the transformation of your circumstances.
“You can’t travel within and stand still without” says Sam Adeyemi. When you make progress in your mind, you will attract circumstances, people, resources in line with your dominant thoughts. It is simply the law of attraction.
The mind is the most difficult thing to master. Little wonder this proverb rings true- “Better to be patient than to be powerful; better to have self-control than conquer a city.” Are you desiring to conquer the world? then conquer your world (your mind). Patience, self control, integrity, excellence are attitudes of the mind.
A whole lot can be said about mind mastery but I think it boils down to three actions:
1. Feed It
2. Guard It
3. Sweat It
1. Feed It
Whatever you feed grows. What ever you starve withers. It is simply the law of nature. People cloth their bodies, beautify it, rest it but neglect their minds. Are you serious about career, financial, relational success or spiritual growth? Success in these areas is a product of right thinking.
Inner transformation is a product of consistent feeding on right information. It can’t be done once in a while and then you expect to reap amazing benefits. It must be a routine, something you do even if you don’t feel like it, even when you can’t see instant results.
Foremost life coach and trainer, Bankole Williams once shared a profound insight with me that “growth is not seen but realized”. Real transformation is tons of repeated intake of the right information plus a lot of actions and many course corrections.
Right information is the kind that promotes your desire for self actualization, that spurs your pursuit of virtue, the good (wholeness) of others and stirs a burden for contribution to the advancement of the world.
It goes without saying that those who are serious about feeding their minds must cultivate a passion for good reading, and that at a voracious level.
I’ll share more thoughts in my next post. Meanwhile, you can drop your comments and questions below.
