“It’s not what we do once in a while that shapes our lives. It’s what we do consistently.” – Anthony Robbins
I will be the first to confess that I struggle with consistency. Sincerely I can coast along and still get things done. But I don’t think it’s a wise way to live. Besides, it’s not working for me.
Why? I don’t want to leave my life or my greatness to chance. Each time I feel that growing tension between where I am and where I know I can be, I realize it’s not so much of skills that stands in between but consistency.
Greatness has a minimum requirement and that is consistency.
One of the greatest advice I have stumbled upon is this – To change your life, you must change what you do daily.
Just when the does the world notice you?
Consistency is that link between what you commit to be or do and when the world begins to pay attention to you.
We don’t pay attention to people who simply show up once in a while. Mastery is not achieved in fits and starts. We must show up daily and start putting in the anecdotal 10000 hours required for mastery.
I have come to see that, consistency is hard and resistance is an enemy that will dog you every step of the way. The war must be fought daily. Yesterday’s victory doesn’t count. Today is another day.
Because I realize that rewards can reinforce positive behaviour, let me share the following benefits to encourage you in your daily pursuit of consistency:
1. Consistency strengthens your personal brand
“Do not do what you cannot continue to deliver. For remember, the world wants to see a continuity of delivery of set standards…” Sujit Lalwani
In a socially connected world, the only thing that sustains attention is consistency. Be known for something and stick with it. We don’t appreciate shifting shapes. We want to know you for something.
When your name comes to mind, we want to be able to identify you with something. You can’t be all things to all men. Who do men say you are? If we can’t agree on something, it’s simply because you are not consistent.
2. Consistency is the key to excellence
“The hallmark of excellence, the test of greatness is consistency” – Jim Trissel
Nothing will exert your consistency power more than the pursuit of excellence. Being simply good starts with going over and beyond the call of duty. Excellence starts when it becomes a regular habit.
Aristotle is right in saying we are what we repeatedly do.
3. Consistency secures your success
“Success is neither magical nor mysterious. Success is the natural consequence of consistently applying basic fundamentals.”– Jim Rohn
People subscribe to the urban myth of luck when their explanation of success precludes the fact that someone has been paying the price behind the curtains.
Do not be deceived into thinking someone suddenly arrived. Success is not sustained by gimmicks. The price of applying some basic fundamentals must be paid day in day out.
Banish the sentiments of overnight success. People succeed because they take small positive steps consistently over time.
4. Consistency develops your talent into skills
“That which we persist in doing becomes easier – not that the nature of the task has changed. But our ability to do has increased.”– Ralph Waldo Emerson
You have heard Thomas Edison say that Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. Talent is simply overrated. They are a dime a dozen.
Calvin Coolidge expresses it better,
“Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing in this world is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educate derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.”
The price of consistency
Don’t try to change your life all at one. What you need is consistency. Reading this article is not a guarantee that you will act. The price of effort must be paid after you have enjoyed the free lunch of motivation.
Take it gradually. Don’t try to pray tomorrow’s prayer today and be missing in action tomorrow. Even heaven appreciates consistency. Faith and patience (consistency) is what delivers heaven’s rewards.
Nothing will be able to stop you when you kick consistency into gear.
