“Great things are not done by impulse but by a series of small things brought together.” – Vincent Van Gogh
I used to be an inspiration junkie but now I understand the purpose of inspiration is just to get you out of inertia.
You know inertia right? That tendency that makes you feel the time is not just right to take action, the task is too enormous it can’t be completed, you are not good enough. It’s that feeling that makes mountains out of your challenges and molehills out of your abilities and initiative.
A lot of us know what to do to change our lives but we never get around to it. I have struggled badly myself. My actions are often not commensurate with my level of knowledge.
But in my pursuit of transformation, I keep finding a common thread – It’s the power of the day to change the direction of your life.
Hey, I didn’t say change the destination of your life in a day. I said the direction of your life.
A common example is the airplane. A slight change in direction can significantly alter the destination of a plane. So also for you, a slight change every day in the direction of your thoughts, attitude and action, repeated everyday can significantly alter your destination years down the line.
Get over it. Stop being sold. Success is the compound effect of small actions. Failure is also the compound effects of small actions (resulting from wrong judgment).
I’m just saying that let today be that day you read one page of that book, you write one paragraph of that essay, you start that saving plan and putting away that little. Let today be that the day you exercise just a little bit.
What I’m trying to inspire here is the small efforts that create momentum.
It can’t be over-emphasized, you will never change your life until you change what you do every day. Don’t be intimidated by the process of change. Focus only on today. Make a decision and keep it just today.
You want to build your character? You can choose to do the right thing just today. Don’t worry about acting right tomorrow.
You want to be smarter? Feed your mind a little with something positive and mind-stretching even if it’s just 15 minutes TODAY.
Nobody said changing your life’s destination is going to be easy. Don’t believe the people who sell such ideas. It’s crass marketing.
This is the formula for transformation according to Darren Hardy – small smarts steps (change in direction) + Consistency + time = RADICAL DIFFERENCE (destination).
If you find yourself lacking desire, ask God for help. God can work in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him (Phil2:13 NLT). He can because he wants the best for you, a wholesome and inspiring life.
Whatever need to happen, do something today no matter how little.
Now what’s your next small step?
